I’m Deeply Saddened and Dismayed

I once believed like many others, that the United States was the Land of the Free. Now I am disheartened because my country has become the Land of the Fearful.

Fascism is quickly becoming the religion of the U.S., and if it does not stop, if good people with good conscious do not end it, Fascism will destroy us.

I am afraid to read the news and am eternally grateful my home does not have cable. The hate that is being spewed by people of power disgusts and hurts me. I’m white, but hell, what harms my brothers and fellow Americans hurts me too.

For each bullet that kills someone because of their race or religion in this country I feel pain, sorrow and shame. I am horribly ashamed and horrified. So much so that it is difficult for me to put my emotions into words.

The poor are getting poorer, the rich are committing atrocities to get more wealth, and the United States of America is paying the price.

I’m not going to join the rhetoric and name names, and I refuse to hate those who hate me. I will not be part of it, I WILL NOT!

If you are a Christian living in the United States today than follow the words of Jesus. Love your neighbor as yourself. When Jesus was asked who the neighbor was you were to love, he didn’t answer, “people who look, act and believe just like you.” Think about that.

If you are Muslim living in the United States today than follow the words of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad.  “None of you have faith until you love for your neighbor what you love for yourself.” Meditate on those words.

If you are Jewish living in the United States today than follow the words of the Torah.
“Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18) Pay attention to what God was saying to you.

If you are an Athiest living in the United States today than remember to love someone else is to love yourself. We are all intimately connected regardless of where we are from, who we love or even what is the color of our skin. Remember that and act accordingly.

If you are a member of the LGBTQ community, then remember how badly it hurt when others hated and reviled you. It was beyond painful, and many lost their lives either by their own hand or the hands of others. Do you want to perpetuate the hate? No. I don’t believe you do. Love everyone even the people who look at you and sneer. Remember, someday you may be in their position of power. Think about that for a while.

Bottom line, the citizens of the United States need to grow up and stop acting like a bunch of young children on the playground. This country has always been about diversity and a land of immigrants. To deny our national identity now is to destroy everything every member of our military throughout our history has fought and died for.

We are one nation, let’s act like it before it is too late and our lovely country becomes just a forgotten experiment gone wrong.

  1. Hi Shirley,

Very kind words! I converted to Judaism a number of years ago. Was raised Catholic. Oh, by the way, I posted your article on my Facebook page. Lari B. Davis – my profile photo is Multiple Us!

  2. Dear Shirley: Lovely post – One quibble:
Fascism is quickly becoming the religion of the U.S., and if it does not stop, if good people with good CONSCIENCE do not end it, Fascism will destroy us.
