Achieving Inner Peace

1

What is inner peace? The dictionary defines it several ways one of which is “freedom of the mind from fear, anxiety and annoyance”. Is there ever a time when our minds aren’t full of one of these things though? Can I have inner peace even in the midst of such turmoil? The answer is a resounding, YES! How on earth, you might be wondering, can she say such a thing. Peace in the midst of inner turmoil? Well, it takes time and practice but it can be done. Let me illustrate.

Right now I face thirty years more of life with no discernable guidance as to what to do with it, yet I feel peaceful about the situation. How? I understand that deep down inside the answers are there waiting to be discovered. I’ve just finished almost three decades of intense psychotherapy and I can tell you I know more about myself than most people will ever know about themselves. I know for sure that I’m intelligent, never known a stranger and love to do public speaking. I can speak about most any topic and love to learn almost any subject. That having been said I also know that God has a plan for my life if only I can find it. He wants me to find it, I just have to listen and pay attention. This knowledge, that I have talents and that God is in control, affords me inner peace that is truly beyond understanding.

I’m not saying I always feel peaceful inside. I’d be lying to say that. Some days, especially long ones like today, I feel unrest spinning in my soul like a crazy top. I want so much to be able to be further down the road yet I know that if I’m not careful I’ll live in tomorrow so much I’ll miss the beauty of today. To not enjoy a cold winter’s day waiting for spring is such a waste of time and beauty. Every season has loveliness of its own and we need to seize onto that idea.

I’m not a philosopher, as I’ve stated before, but I do understand that life is a grand adventure and if we aren’t careful we can miss out on all the blessings we have today worrying and fretting about tomorrow.

Make the most of the present moment! Carpe Diem! Seize the day! Only in this moment and at this time can you truly find inner peace for tomorrow.

“Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.”

Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield
